Prep baseball playoffs: Bountiful upsets Olympus; Davis hits walk-off slam

HOLLADAY — Fourth-seeded Bountiful (8-18) scored six runs in the second inning and pulled off a big upset on the road at top-seeded Olympus (23-3) to win 6-2 in the first round of the 5A state baseball playoffs Tuesday.

Mason Farr, Anthony Wuthrich and Luke Stout each drove in a run for the Braves in the second inning.

Olympus responded with two runs in the sixth inning. Bountiful pitcher JD Cunningham tossed 5 1/3 innings and picked up the win. The Braves will travel to second-seeded Timpanogos at 4 p.m. Wednesday.


KAYSVILLE — Davis trailed Lone Peak 5-2 going into the bottom of the seventh but hit two home runs to beat the Knights and advance in the 6A state tournament.

Zac Mansfield hit a solo home run to pull the Darts to within two. Davis then loaded the bases thanks in part to a Stockton Hall double. Zack Hoskins came to the plate with one out and blasted a game-winning grand slam.

Hall picked up the win in relief, pitching 2 1/3 innings. Adam Hackmeister batted 2 for 4 for the Darts, who will host Hunter in the second round at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

STORYViewmont vanquishes Highland in 5A first round


CLEARFIELD — Clearfield scored two runs in the third inning to beat Pleasant Grove in the first round of the 6A state playoffs.

Ethan Giacalone drove in Brady Ross for the first Clearfield run. Tyson Walker put down a squeeze bunt to score Chandler Kotter for the second.

Bryson Hirabayashi tossed a complete game, allowing three hits and striking out seven. The Falcons will travel to top-seed Cyprus on Wednesday.


AMERICAN FORK — American Fork pounded 13 hits as the second-seeded Cavemen beat third-seeded Northridge in the 6A first round.

Drew West went 3 for 3 for Northridge with a double while Ryker Kap went 2 for 4 with a solo home run. Dakari Armendariz and Paul Fomby each drove in a run for the Knights.

Northridge will host Kearns at 4 p.m. Wednesday in an elimination game.


SOUTH JORDAN — Top-seeded Bingham scored three runs in the sixth inning to force the run rule and beat fourth-seeded Weber.

Mitch McKnight hit an RBI single in the top of the first inning to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. Jackson Dial was the winning pitcher for Bingham while Bridger Vorwaller took the loss for Weber.

The Warriors travel to Granger for an elimination game at 4 p.m. Wednesday.


BRIGHAM CITY — Skyline jumped to a 6-0 lead after two innings in a 5A playoff first-round win at Box Elder.

Skyler Laurintin batted 3 for 3 with a double to pace the Bees. Jake Holgate went 2 for 4 and Jace Wilding hit a two-run double. Bryan Ramirez and Porter Cochran each had a double and drove in one. Box Elder scored four runs in the third inning. Jeremy Gee took the loss.

The Bees host fourth-seeded Wasatch at 4 p.m. Wednesday in an elimination game.


MURRAY — Murray scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to get a walk-off win over third-seeded Roy.

Jaxson Dart had three hits and drove in six runs for the Royals. Hunter Yoder and Jack Hulce each had three hits with Yoder collecting three RBIs.

The Royals led 4-0 after three innings before the Spartans scored 10 runs in the fourth to take a 10-4 lead.

The teams jousted back and forth until the sixth inning when Roy scored seven runs to tie the game 12-12. The Royals led 14-13 heading to the final inning.

Roy hosts fourth-seeded Brighton at 4 p.m. Wednesday in an elimination game.
